Last night I attended an event at the Republic of Fritz Hansen store.
New York based textile design company Maharam has teamed up with the Danish furniture brand Republic of Fritz Hansen™ and textile design company Kvadrat for the European launch of Point, a new upholstery textile designed in collaboration by the fashion designer Paul Smith.
To celebrate the launch, the textile will be upholstered on a selection of Fritz Hansen's classic design icons including the Egg™, Swan™ and Grand Prix™ by Arne Jacobsen and the PK22™ chair by Poul Kjærholm, as well as the Alphabet Sofa™ by Piero Lissoni.
It was an inspiring evening, seeing the classic icons given a new twist, which is where I am coming from with my pieces. My favourite has to be the Swan™. However, it's not just chairs . Cushion's can also be purchased. The quality of fabrics are stunning and very tactile, the colours so rich.
The gentleman you see working on the Egg™ actually works in the Danish based Fritz Hansen factory. He told me that from start to finish, it can take up to 9 hours to complete the upholstery by hand, depending on breaks! It was gratifying to know that the method he was using to sew the back piece using the curved needle method, is one that I use myself (in particular on my Child's Chair). He told me this method has not changed for many, many years. Watching him closely, it felt good knowing I was still doing it correctly!
